About Us
Unique Granite & Marble has been building custom granite and quartz countertops since 2004; however, our business roots run far deeper than most of our customers would ever expect. In 1991 I opened my own business and after years of hard work and long hours; Rick Thomas Custom Building had slowly begun to develop a reputation as a premiere home building company in Owensboro and the surrounding areas. Even in the beginning I was more comfortable having control of my business rather than letting quality and our schedule rest in the hands of subcontractors. We did all of our own concrete, framing, tile, trim work, and even built our own custom cabinets for each one of our homes. While this could be very hectic in its own right, we finished our homes on time and to high customer satisfaction due largely to our employees. We employed some of the most talented craftsmen in the region, many of whom still work for Unique Granite to this day.
As granite and marble started to become more affordable in the late 90's and early 2000's, we began to feature stone in many of our homes. As a builder, I would cringe when my customers would tell me they wanted to put granite in their home. It was not that I had a problem with the product itself, in fact, natural building materials have always intrigued me; however, the problem at that point was that there was no local source for granite. Many of our customers would have to travel two to three hours to pick out their stone and find a fabricator. The granite would often arrive on the jobsite weeks late and with subpar results.
The last straw finally came in early 2002. We had just completed an extensive full house remodel and everything looked great. Everything that is, except for the limestone countertops which had just arrived and were incorrect. We didn't have the time to wait around for new stone to be ordered and fabricated so I got on the phone and ordered the right granite tools to fix the countertops. Since we already had the tools (and a hefty investment in them), we decided to fabricate the granite for the next home ourselves. Eventually we began fabricating for other area builders and cabinets shops; and before long, we were ready to make the move from custom home building to full-time custom countertop fabrication.
I am proud to say that since 2004 with the help of my family, friends, and coworkers; Unique Granite & Marble has risen from humble beginnings to become the area’s largest and most skilled fabricator of custom stone countertops. As a company we have embraced technology to deliver industry leading service and support. Our digital templating system allows us to measure your cabinets with pinpoint accuracy to insure that your countertop fits your kitchen like a glove. With our full CAD and CNC routing capabilities, we are able to do virtually any design you can think of--truly giving your kitchen a custom feel. When choosing an exotic stone for their kitchen we allow every customer the opportunity to see a digital representation of what their actual countertop will look like before we even begin cutting. The technology required to do this digital representation is called SlabSmith and it is an essential part of any exotic stone project to insure a great looking result. Please see our SlabSmith link on the toolbar to learn more about the process and see examples of our work.
Unique Granite features the largest fabricator owned slabyard in the Tri-State area. At over 800 slabs and counting, we are sure to have the right stone to appease even the most particular of tastes. Traditionally granite has only been available with a high-gloss finish; however, we are excited to announce that as of Spring 2011 we have added new machinery to our shop that will allow us to put many different finishes on any countertop. Only the second one in the entire United States, our new Levibreton Slab Polisher gives us the capability to hone, suede, leather, or caress virtually any stone.
At Unique Granite & Marble, we strive to work with every customer to make getting new countertops the easiest part of any remodeling project.
